Brief description of the position:

The System Engineer for Operational Strategy is responsible for defining, developing, and validating the energy and torque management strategies for interaction of electric and combustion power sources across all vehicle operating conditions. This role ensures optimal vehicle performance, efficiency, emissions, drivability, and component protection through system-level strategy definition.

Key Tasks:

  • Define hybrid operating modes and system-level control strategies (EV, hybrid, boost, charging, regeneration, limp-home) across the full vehicle operating envelope in cooperation with all relevant stakeholders.
  • Develop system-level energy and torque management concepts, balancing performance, efficiency, emissions, drivability, and component durability.
  • Translate vehicle attribute targets into functional system requirements for hybrid operation and allocate them to powertrain subsystems (engine, e-machine, battery, transmission, thermal, brakes).
  • Own the system behavior across operating states and transitions, including mode changes, engine start/stop, and power source blending.
  • Lead cross-functional integration with engine, e-drive, battery, transmission, thermal, chassis, and software teams to ensure consistent hybrid behavior.
  • Define failure and fallback operational strategies to ensure functional safety, drivability, and customer-perceived robustness under fault conditions.
  • Support calibration and software development by providing system logic, boundary conditions, and strategy documentation.
  • Validate hybrid strategies using MiL/SiL/HiL, vehicle testing, and simulation, ensuring compliance with performance, efficiency, and regulatory targets.
  • Optimize customer-relevant attributes such as fuel consumption, EV range, shift quality, noise/vibration/harshness (NVH), and drive comfort.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory, OBD, and homologation requirements related to hybrid operation and energy management.
  • Performing individual task-related duties in accordance with the knowledge and experience of the position holder.
  • Advising other people holding positions at VCTC, its subsidiaries/associate companies, or cooperating organizations upon request and in consultation with the appropriate people responsible.

Qualification and skills required for the position:

  • Masters’s degree or above, majored in automotive engineering, mechanical engineering or industrial engineering other related fields.
  • Proven experience as a Design, Integration or thermal management engineer with focus on systems engineering or similar role.
  • Familiar with ASPICE development methodologies.
  • Familiar with Electrical and Hybrid Powertrain System architecture and components.
  • Familiar with dependencies and effect chains of (PH-/ER-)EV powertrain components in system environment.
  • Excellent attention to detail, problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to learn new methods and find creative solutions for complex problems.
  • Excellent communication skills, fluent in English (spoken and written).
